The problem with the MLS has always been, and will always be, that Americans will not support a professional sports league that is not the best in the world. MLS is not even close to being the best soccer league. At best it's 4th best in the world, and there is no way to close the gap.

Fourth? I know you said "at best", but I'd definitely put it behind:

England
Spain
Italy
France
Germany
Portugal
Scotland (for ppg and Celtic)
Brazil
Argentina

Probably others...that said, I think MLS can still succeed here.

Define succeed...it's been around 12 seasons and has slowly been built into something viable under a model that seems to work, minus a few kinks...

The best the MLS will ever be is 4th in the world. Who knows where it is right now -- 8th, 10th, whatever. The point is it's not the best. And it shows.

The best it can ever hope to be in the US is to the NHL level, but I don't think it has a realistic shot of achieving that.
